Oscar invites you.

Who’s Oscar?

Oscar's story began in the 1950s. Back then, it was the name of a well-known and leading oldtimer garage in the Begijnhoflaan in Ghent. It was run by Mr Ernst, a former aircraft engine technician. Garage Oscar grew and also took on the Volkswagen car brand. The garage remained open until Mr Ernst died in the 1990s.

In the year 2004, the old mansion with its adjoining warehouse/garage caught my eye and I immediately felt the property’s potential. The location is fantastic: Walk out the door and you are merely steps away from the beating heart of Ghent's historical city centre. Stroll through the charming and authentic little streets of Ghent's Begijnhof (Beguinage) as you make your way to the Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts). I felt the soul of the building and followed my instincts: that was the start of my chapter in the story of Garage Oscar.

My chapter Of Oscar’s transformation.

When renovating, my goal was clear-cut: I wanted to create an oasis of calm in the middle of the city. I decided to demolish part of the authentic building in order to create a garden between the mansion and the garage. So the house was converted into three luxury apartments. At the time, I used the garage as storage space.

Years passed, until we received approval through an architectural firm to convert the garage into office and vacation rentals. At the time, I was working on my project abroad, View14. I immediately felt the inspiration bubbling up to combine the knowledge I had gathered there with the right look & feel for this new project. The summery, sunny and southern concept I had in mind was unprecedented in the neighborhood of the old Begijnhof.

And so, with this second renovation, the revival of the once bustling garage began. The transformation was impressive: the garage that consisted of three walls and a roof was transformed into three rooms/studios. They are the perfect base from which to explore the city and to enjoy and relax carefree after a city visit. They are equipped with their own kitchen, a sitting and dining area and a bedroom and bathroom. The warm decoration adds a touch of Malaga to your stay in Ghent. Each room/studio has a terrace and garden to enjoy.

Oscar's garage had a fantastic makeover. The conversion of the authentic building transformed it into a beautiful, practical and luxurious place to stay. A true home away from home, with a little extra splash of Malaga sunshine! Finally, Oscar, the old garage was reborn, given a new life as a tourist, not a car hotspot in the breathtakingly beautiful city of Ghent.
